The incredible Brittany Gibbons put up a post on her blog for some August blogging prompts to promote self love and acceptance and body confidence. The outpouring of responses in our curvy community has been amazing to say the least. I chose today to do number 22. Asking people to name things about me that are beautiful was a little bit daunting, because I don’t like to ask for compliments, but, when I posted on my facebook page yesterday with the question, the responses blew me away. I got replies from people I would not have expected and some very lovely things said about me and I thought, what better way to usher in my birthday today than to share them here with you.
People said: Resilient, persevering, fun; Courage, strength, love; Your inner and outer beauty, your courage and your strength; Friendship, ability to find humour in anything, your imagination; your sense of humour, your love for your children and hubby and you, just the way you are Beautiful inside and out!; Feistiness, humour and way with words; Caring, friendly and fun, just to name a few.; Your inner strength, your beautiful heart and your love of family and friends. You are a beautiful soul; Your ability to write relationships so strong and clear in your stories that you miss them when you are done reading, your eyes and your rack is pretty hot!
Talk about being blown away! Seeing some things come up more than once was an eye opener for me. I had no idea people saw me as someone courageous, but it was mentioned more than once. I am glad that my love for my family and friends was mentioned a lot though, because I do love, love a lot and love hard.
Brittany asks in her post how this list compares to one I would make about myself. Well, obviously I mentioned love. It’s something that I need to have in my life and something I try to share with those important to me. I posted yesterday about love here on the blog, so it is for sure a major component of my life. When you’ve lost opportunities to tell people that you love them, and I have in my life (miss you Nana), I make it a big part of who I am to tell someone, out loud and in the moment, that I love them. You never know when it will be your last chance to say it. Sense of humour, which was mentioned, is also really important to me. Lord knows I’ve had enough happen in my life to get all maudlin and melancholy about. Angry or depressed even. But in my now 39 years on this earth I have learned that finding the humour in a situation and laughing as often as possible is far more healthy than lingering on sadness and self doubt. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE a good cry, but I’d rather spend my days smiling and laughing. Without question. The last thing I would put on my own list is my ability to learn and grow. Like everyone, I have made mistakes in my life. Some of them HUGE. But, I have finally learned to take those mistakes and turn them into opportunities for growth and that is something that took me a very long time to understand.
Treasure your friendships, cherish your family, be brave in facing the world and trying new things and never lose your ability to laugh, especially at yourself. Life is a gift.
Thanks to all my loved ones who answered my request yesterday and thanks to all who have been bombarding my facebook page with happy birthday wishes!
It’s a great day to love life.
