I have a problem. At least, I probably have a problem.
All my work for Summer Poppies…ALL of it, the notes, the chapter breakdowns, the files on characters, the half finished novel…every bit of it is saved in one place and one place only. On a zip drive.
That I can’t find.
A little while ago I got panicked that my laptop might be dying, and even though I’ve had my fair share of problems with it lately, it’s still working just fine. Especially now that I have finally replaced the charger cord and I have power again. But, in my panic, and having already lived through one instance of a laptop dying and taking all files on it in that death, I kept my work on this book on a small light blue drive. And that is the only place I’ve kept it.
Which has worked well for me and has been fine, until.
(I’m NOT blaming him, seriously – he had no way of knowing)
My husband cleaned/rearranged our bedroom before my parent’s visit this week.
The drive had been living on my bedside table, but last weekend, I had accidentally knocked it onto the floor. I didn’t pick it up right away because my back has been sore with re-adjusting to work and with no power on the laptop, I knew I couldn’t do any work on it soon. So it sat on my floor for a few days, just under my table, in view and almost teasing me with the fact that I couldn’t use it.
Last night I asked him where it was moved to. He said it was on my bookshelf. This morning I noticed my other, black drive, on my shelf. I asked about the blue one. He thought I meant the black one. No idea where the blue one is. Doesn’t even remember seeing it.
We’re going to look for it tonight. We’re going to PRAY that it wasn’t accidentally thrown out. I will never get the words the same. I only have the first three chapters that I shared with my writing group. I will be devestated if it’s gone.
How often do you back up your work? And where? Do you put it in more than one place?
Keep your fingers crossed that I do not have to start writing this book over again. Please!
