We had five deer in our yard yesterday throughout the day, a record for us. Normally we see one deer every few days or so and not too often in our actual tree line but yesterday morning four of them, two adults and two jeuvenile, were just hanging out beyond the fenced in pool area right at the back of our yard.
There’s a gap in the bottom of the fence back there so if we let the dogs out, our two smaller ones Katie and Kermit can dip under and roam the backyard.
Yesterday morning while I was struggling with being awake at 7:30, my kids were delighting in watching our dogs try their level best to corral the deer back into the woods. Most amusing, I was told.
Then last night just around 6 pm, my daughter and I were in the back room and we let out the dogs. No big deal, they went out and we chatted. All of a sudden we heard them go insane with barking. Another full grown deer had come into the back yard and was staring them down. The smaller two; 25lb Katie the pug-bull and 8lb Kermit the pom-poo. The dogs stared back for all of five seconds and then whoosh!! My dogs hurtled themselves after that deer like they were starving and she was a meal. They barked and literally flew across the yard and chased her over to the neighbors place before we got them back inside where Kermit gave a definitively loud sniff as if to say “my house, bitch”. If a tiny lap dog could be thug, well, he was doing his level best to exude that.
As much as I am getting used to the abundance of wildlife here in stunning New Brunswick, I will never tire of watching my dogs in a pissing match with an animal several times their size. Especially with Kermit. In fact, I’m kind of rooting for him to eventually take one down and, inch by hard fought inch, drag it to the house as a trophy for me.
Okay, no I’m not, but wouldn’t that be hilarious?
