For the most part, I have stayed away from posting rant-y blogs on here where I get all upset and blow off steam at a faction of society, but today, I just have to put in my two cents.
Maclean’s magazine has lost their damn mind.
In a recent print, they allowed the self indulgent at best, misguided bobble-headed Barbara Amiel to submit her thoughts on the heinous crime committed in Steubenville and the resulting article is nothing less than a humongous leap backwards for women, men and society as a whole.
“In a normal society, the girl’s mother would have locked her up for a week and all boys present would have been suspended from school and their beloved football team. Instead we had a trial and media circus: two boys out of the many were declared juvenile delinquents guilty of rape (by inserting a finger in her vagina) with custodial sentences of a year each, one getting an extra year for distributing her photo,” she writes. “The boys go on a juvenile sex offender list. The girl could do with an alcohol abuse program while Steubenville clearly suffers from a shortage of parents in situ.”
Really Barbara?? REALLY??
In a “normal” society, huh?
It seems that Ms Amiel has declared open season. The next time one of you ‘boys’ runs into her at a $1000 a plate fundraiser, maybe a little worse for wear due to the decadent champagne, rest assured, she does not feel that ‘inserting a finger’ into her unwilling vagina will garner you any more punishment than having your town car and driver taken away from you for a week. And should (heaven forbid those scalliwags) take photographic evidence and pass it on around the ol’ boys club, well, she’ll have no call to sue for indecency or invasion of privacy, since she’s already stated that behaviour like this deserves little more than a grounding. All those Toronto paparazzi, having read this, must have been twittering with glee at the thought of finally capturing the newly green lit money shot.
How depressing that she thinks in a ‘normal’ society this would have all blown over in a short matter of time. What a sad commentary she puts onto the unwitting men and boys in Canada and the US with her implications that they simply cannot help themselves; when faced with a barely conscious woman, *of course* they cannot help but debase her. Pardon me, but I believe our men are much better than that.
I call shame on Maclean’s magazine. How dare you run such an article and call it worthy of more than lining for the bottom of a birdcage.
A girl was violated. Against her will. Period.
To call it anything less is to further tromp on her dignity, her humanity and her rights.
